This has been a dream, a mention, an afterthought for ten years. Working in one of the nations largest districts and moving into the charter world made me realize that these schools were not allowed to do what is best for kids. From cutting recess, electives, science, and history to move a needle that measures how well you take a test. The constant laser like focus on the wrong things became disheartening. As a principal of 1,200 students and over 100 employees, my mental health was at an all time low. I was having daily panic attacks, “missing my exit” on the way to work, and selling my soul to mandate rules I didn’t believe in to my core. I couldn’t even look in the mirror without starting to hate who I was becoming. My best days were days I was subbing and I knew I needed to create something different and get back to teaching daily.

What changes have you seen in yourself as an educator since launching NVSI?

I have certainly had a shift in my beliefs as an educator. I am more accepting of family vacations duringnvsi-2 the school year. You will learn more in two weeks in Europe than any classroom, so go, take the trip. I am much more relaxed in my approach, and believe that content is the true key to the learning gap, not skills. When students understand the way the world works or the topic, you can then apply skills…not the other way around. Having a small group allows me to work 1:1 daily without sacrificing anything. I get to know each student as an individual and this helps me be a better instructor, guide, and mentor.

What advice would you give to a teacher or mentor that is thinking of starting their own microschool?

What are you waiting for? Do it! This is how education should be. Small, specialized, and with true freedom to make the best choices for the students in your building. Be sure to have a healthy amount in savings because there are little surprises around the corner and you want to be financially secure during this transitional phase. Count on the community of educators that have paved the way. We are here to help and want to see you succeed!
