National Microschooling Center's Thursday Bulletin

Hello Microschooling Community!

Good morning from Mississippi, the latest stop in the Center’s Training Workshops Tour, and we’re a long way from slowing down! Our team has been traveling to grow the microschooling movement since May and we aren’t slowing down anytime soon! From Navigating New Horizons in Florida to a standing-room-only workshops in Arkansas to AERO in New Hampshire, we are supporting founders to launch, lead and thrive in a state near you!

Today Don, Ashley and Katie are gearing up for our full-day training in Jackson Mississippi tomorrow! Meanwhile, preparations are underway in Atlanta for our July 11 training workshop there with Don, Ashley and Tiffany!

Looking for a chance to connect with the Center? Check out our events to see if we are headed to a state near you. Interested in bringing the Center to your community? Reach out to Ashley Soifer at ashley@microschoolingcenter.org to learn more about our trainings, sessions and workshops!

In this edition, Nonacademic learning the new top student outcome for prelaunch microschool founders, how Black-led microschools fit into this country’s powerful education history where the first forms of school choice were created by Black and brown families, and an interview on the One Good Day Podcast, plus reintroducing Bloomy, Center trainings and all the events you’ve been looking for!

Microschool Founders Prioritize Nonacademic Learning

For the first time, new prelaunch microschool founders indicated that growth in nonacademic learning ranks as their top priority among desired student outcomes for their microschool, writes Don Soifer in his latest article. Academic mastery/proficiency runs a close second, followed by academic growth? What is nonacademic learning, exactly? And how do its many different forms look across today’s microschool movement? Read and find out.

Black-led Microschools and Their Crucial Foundations in American Educational History

“The history of Black-led education in the U.S. is not a history of waiting for systems to change,” writes Tiffany Blassingame in her new article, “The Roots of Resistance: A History of Black Schools in America,” for NMC. “it is a history of building something better in the face of laws, violence, and exclusion. That history stretches from the hidden schoolrooms of the antebellum South to the microschools across the country today….. The history of Black schools is the foundation, and the work of reimagining education is far from over.” You can read the full article here.

Ashley Soifer on One Good Idea Podcast

Our own Ashley Soifer was thrilled to join Peter Franzen from Missouri’s CEAM on the One Good Idea Podcast! Take a listen to learn more about the microschooling movement including What makes a microschool different from traditional schools, How microschools emerged as a national movement, Why many educators are leaving traditional systems to start microschools, The growth of microschooling in rural communities and high school education and what scale looks like for microschool founders.

The Training Institute

Have you gone through a training at the National Microschooling Center’s Training Institute? This is the nation’s most popular, fastest-growing, highest rated training program for microschools. The National Microschooling Center has helped more founders launch than any other organization in the country and we want to help you! Our trainings are completely free and are open to the public. These trainings are designed for both prelaunch and currently operating founders, along with microschool facilitators, leaders and guides.

Access Point: All the Need-to-Know info about Learning Tools and Providers

Correction: Introducing Bloomy!

Last week we shared information about a new NMC Partnership Provider, but the link we included was incorrect. We're re-introducing Bloomy, a mastery-based English Language Arts platform for grades 4-12. Special pricing is available for Center members. Make sure you check out Bloomy in Access Point and on their website, and reach out for an introduction!
