National Microschooling Center's Thursday Bulletin
Hello microschooling friends!
There’s something rare happening here, and we don’t say that lightly.
This microschooling movement isn’t built on sameness, it’s built on a diverse, beautiful mix of people. Different backgrounds, different for learners. And yet, somehow, it not only works, it thrives. Because at its core, this is a community that throws its doors wide open to bring everyone into the party. You welcome each other in with arms wide open. You share what you’ve learned. You answer the late-night questions, offer encouragement on the hard days, and celebrate the wins like they’re your own.
That’s what makes this more than just a collection of microschools. It’s what makes it a movement. You. The founders, the facilitators and the ones who give so much of yourself to create the solution your community needs.
We’re deeply grateful to be part of it with you. Without each other, this doesn’t exist.
In this week’s edition: New facilities law in Florida tops the legislative update, New video drop, Microschools in the News, and more!
Latest Legislative and Policy Update
Passed in the closing days of Florida’s 2026 legislative session, an amendment added to a teacher training bill, SB 182, gives private schoolsthe right to use facilities formerly used as church, library, community service organizations, or other specified or public uses “without rezoning or obtaining a special exception or a land use change, and without complying with any mitigation requirements or conditions.” Only a small share of Florida microschools have chosen to register as private schools, so while useful to some, the law’s important benefits for microschooling remain limited.
In Arizona, in the wake of a ballot initiative being funded and pushed by school choice opponents to restrict and limit the state’s popular ESA program, a new alternative ballot measure has been introduced. “The Arizona Empowerment Accounts Reform and Accountability Act,” which some school choice supporters have endorsed, seems intended to position relatively modest changes, rather than the prospect of more severe restrictions should the competing measure, the “Protect Education Act,” and its numerous program constraints pass on the November ballot.
Texas has extended the deadline for families to apply for ESAs under the TEFA program to March 31. Over 200,000 student applications have been received already, so priority groupings of applicants by household income and children with special needs will determine who receives scholarships for the initial year.
New Video Drop: Why Microschooling is the Answer, Part 2
Wondering why so many people are excited about microschools? Take a listen as some of the Center's incredible team members share out why they think microschooling is the answer to American education. Small, personalized and solutions designed for right now, microschools are providing an answer for communities across the country.
Microschools in the News
"Together, these factors have primed Texas for a microschool boom," observes this positive Houston Chronicle feature story about Texas microschooling this week(password protected). For teachers frustrated by constraints in their public school classrooms, "The microschool model, a blend of private and home school, has given them more control over the classroom.” Texas newspapers have generally been hesitant to embrace innovative school models, but over the past month microschooling coverage has been quite encouraging.
You Don’t Have to Be All Things to All People…
is valuable advice Missouri founder Dr. Jill Brown, also the Center’s inspiring field coordinator, offers this week in her latest article. “Clarity is part of what makes microschools so special,” she writes. “You get to design your school intentionally. You get to serve families who are looking for what you uniquely offer.” Lots of inspiring and useful guidance here, worth reading (and sharing).
