National Microschooling Center's Thursday Bulletin
Hello Microschooling Community!
Federal officials this morning previewed forthcoming regulations for the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit including:
The proposed new regulations state that participating states are not permitted to impose their own operating requirements about the type of school scholarship recipients may attend beyond the broad language in the federal law, according to the Treasury and Education Department officials.
Another major development allows married taxpayers filing jointly to claim a combined nonrefundable federal income tax credit of up to $3,400, while individual filers may claim up to $1,700 for cash contributions to eligible scholarship grant organizations.
Additionally, scholarship granting organizations will not be permitted to earmark any contributions for a particular student.
In this week's edition: evolving school models to prepare students to succeed in our fast-changing world, what students in charge of their own learning can look like, new instructional leadership cohort, a spotlight on partnership provider Miaplaza and other events…
Preparing Students To Succeed in Our Changing Economy
What Microschools Are Demonstrating About Preparing Students for the Future is Don Soifer’s new essay on the Center website this week. Many of today’s microschool models, “Can look very different than those in the traditional systems more familiar to us, as do their impacts, and in ways that support student flourishing to meet these challenges.”
When Students Are in Charge of Their Own Learning
Rubric Reboot 2026: What Happens When Learners Set the Standards, an inspiring essay from Texas microschool founder (and NMC’s Outreach Coordinator) Erin Flynn discusses and details what matters most about models that authentically embody what it means for students to be in charge of their learning.
Dr. Flynn presents her Hedge School's ready-for-action-or-iteration self evaluation rubric around domains for performance and understanding, created collaboratively with her high school students.
