National Microschooling Center's Thursday Bulletin

Hello Microschooling Community!

There’s so much happening with microschools around the country right now, and so much of it is about New. New microschools are opening, new families are being welcomed into the movement, new facilities are opening, and the happy scrambling veteran leaders around the movement know well have kicked into high gear.

Arizona microschool founders got some sudden good news yesterday when their state supreme court ruled that opponents of the state’s ESA program had failed to obtain the required number of signatures to get their Proposition 212 on the ballot this November (you can read more details here courtesy of our friends at EdChoice).

We’re just as immersed in that happy scramble here at NMC, especially helping support microschools navigate needs and challenges. A new information session next week about microschool accreditation through Middle States, and supporting the many thousands of learning tool student accounts microschools receive through our popular Learning Tools Program are just two of these. The National Microschooling Center Training Institute is proving another popular resource helping new microschool educators and their staff gain critical knowledge and skills (and it’s free).

In this edition: Microschools in the News, Meet Dr. Erin Flynn, check out a new preferred provider (in our Access Point section!) with expert supports for dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia, plus the deadline to get Google for Education approaching, and more.

Microschools in the News

The Reason Foundation published an article about The Rise of Florida’s Microschools that, along with some rewarding discussion with some compelling microschool founders, delves into concerning observations from one lawmaker and state education officials in support of more regulation over nonpublic school options. Florida microschool will recognize the article ignores the pressing problems of local regulation. While a Florida law that took effect last month helped with zoning requirements for small schools registered with the FLDOE as private schools, it didn’t offer solutions to regulatory barriers in obtaining certificates of occupancy from local officials, which many Florida microschools are struggling with.

And a new article from the American Enterprise Institute describes ways “Charter school leaders weigh private and microschool options.” Among other observations, it describes how a substantial number of charter school leaders in states with ESA programs indicate that they would have considered opening private or microschool options instead of charter schools had the programs been available at that time.

Meet the Team: Dr. Erin Flynn

Have you met the Center's Outreach Coordinator, Dr. Erin Flynn? Erin is an incredible resource to microschool founders! If you are new to the Center, you'll definitely want to join of of Doc Flynn's meetings!

Hot Topic: September Book Talk with Mickey Revenaugh

The latest memorable book about microschools, School’s Out: Why Families Are Choosing Unconventional Education, by veteran innovation expert Mickey Revenaugh, offers lots the microschooling community will value. “Microschools by their very nature embody the ‘let a thousand flowers bloom’ phase of education innovation,” the book explains. “Their essential smallness runs counter to the notion of scale, a holy grail in certain education innovation circles.” Read an excerpt from School’s Out here on the Center website.

And join us Tuesday, September 1 at 4pm PT/7pm ET for a discussion with the author - details and registration link here.

The book can now be purchased through Johns Hopkins University Press, NMC Members use Promo Code HTWN to get a 30% discount
