National Microschooling Center's Thursday Bulletin

Hello Microschooling Community!

We're intentionally keeping this (and the next few) newsletters short with only the most pressing need-to-know news while you wrap up your schools year. While founders across the nation are handling everything from navigating a lease for a new facility to handing out diplomas at graduations, the end of the school year is full of bittersweet goodbyes and the growing excitement about what's ahead for next year!

Louisiana Law Helps Microschools Open Facilities

The Louisiana legislature has scheduled for final vote in the Senate today new legislation designed to provide nonprofit "parent-driven learning cooperatives" (broadly defined) with protection against obstructive regulatory action by local officials that could block or complicate their opening in a new facility. HB 1203 from State Rep. Kathy Edmonston provides that, "If a building used as a home or commercial establishment has met the requirements for occupancy and has received a certification of occupancy or an occupancy license for the use of the building, the government shall not restrict or deny the use of the building by parents who are participating in a parent-driven learning cooperative." It passed the House earlier this month.

The definitions of the microschools or learning co-ops that will be protected is nice and broad (beyond the nonprofit requirement). The bill if passed will be the latest state law designed to help nontraditional small learning environments overcome local regulatory pressures, and would next head to the desk of Governor Jeff Landry, a Republican from Broussard.
